About the Birgu Ghost and Witchcraft Tour
Birgu is the city that took part in the Great Siege of Malta (1565). It is also known as Cittá Vittoriosa (the victorious city) and is famous for being an ancient maritime city. With its rich history in military, maritime activities, and even witchcraft, it is no surprise that the place is crowded with ghosts.
The city also served as the headquarters of the Holy Roman Inquisition, whose infamous torture methods are still remembered to this day.
Witchcraft played a significant role in Birgu’s dark history. The city was a hotspot for accusations of sorcery and witchcraft, especially during the height of the Inquisition. Women, in particular, were often targeted, accused of casting spells, communing with the devil, or practicing forbidden arts. Many of these alleged witches were subjected to brutal interrogations and horrifying punishments. Those who were convicted faced public executions, often by burning at the stake, a grim spectacle that served as a warning to others. The fear of witchcraft was so pervasive that it led to the creation of secret trials and dark rituals aimed at purging the city of what was believed to be evil influences.
The horrors didn’t end there; the Second World War between 1940 and 1943 brought further inescapable deaths and destruction to the city.
Such events, along with other dark periods in Birgu's history, have left their mark. Many still claim that ghosts, including those of the accused witches, haunt this city to this day. The spirits of those who were wrongfully condemned continue to roam the streets, seeking justice or revenge for the injustices they suffered. Join us for a thrilling adventure, and learn more about Birgu’s dark and mysterious past.
